Of all the tents we’ve reviewed in Backpacker, few have had the staying power of Big Agnes’s Copper Spur line. “When the Copper Spur debuted in 2008, it changed the formula we used to choose a shelter,” we wrote when we inducted it into our Editors’ Choice Hall of Fame in 2018. While there are better tents for pure ultralighters—the Copper Spur HV UL3 has a respectable trail weight of 3 lb 18 oz, or 1 lb 6 oz per person—it still represents a high water mark for weight and livability. The 29 square feet of floor space and 40 inch peak height have helped us weather storms on hikes across North and South America, while the dual doors (with dual 9-square-foot vestibules) make entry and egress easy. Five storage pockets provide ample spaces to stash keys, wallets, phones, and headlamps, while the double ripstop nylon construction has proven strong enough to push into moderate winter conditions. All three models—1-, 2-, and 3-person—are available at REI now for 30% off.
