Every Southern porch needs a porch swing. They are perfect for warm days when you want to soak up the sunshine or sway to the sound of light afternoon rain (with a book and an icy drink). And in the South, porches are an extension of our interiors, so we try to make them as homey as possible.

“The possibilities with a porch swing are endless! My dream is to one day have a huge wraparound porch with several outdoor sitting areas and a cozy front porch swing right up front. It's where sweet conversations will happen, afternoon naps, and lazy days of watching the world go by—my ideal idea of relaxation,” says Mimi Meacham, the founder and principal designer at Marian Louise Design in Houston.

To determine the best porch swings, we evaluated dozens of options on type, material, assembly, and more. Editors also tested several porch swings our from list to see if they were truly comfortable for reclining and relaxation.

Weather-resistant material that won’t splinter, peel or fade

Easy setup with a clear instruction guide

Made in the United States

20-year warranty

Comfortably seats three

Limited color options

Material feels slippery

Mounting hardware must be purchased separately

Installation requires a power drill

When you’re looking for a porch swing that is comfortable and durable, we recommend the Polywood Vineyard as our number one option. It made it to the top of our list because it blends traditional and modern design, in addition to being top-quality. Plus it got brownie points from us because it fit in perfectly with our porch aesthetic. It comes in multiple colors, though we’d like to see even more.

The seat measures 55 inches across (one of the widest of all our basic porch swing options) and can seat three people with ease. We found that the seat and the chains were quite sturdy and its back provided plenty of support.

The swing offers ample space to hang out with family and friends or to stretch your legs when you’re alone. It is crafted from Polywood lumber (aka high-density polyethylene), which is made in the U.S.A. from recycled plastics commonly used in milk jugs and laundry detergent containers. This material is not only weatherproof, it has UV protection, and doesn’t require a lot of upkeep. Even though we did not experience any extreme weather while using it, the swing held up against the elements and did not splinter or peel. But, we found the material slippery, so we do suggest buying an extra cushion to make sitting more comfortable.

The porch comes with a 20-year warranty, which is a pretty good indication that you’re buying a quality product. All swings feature color-stay technology, which protects the chair and helps keep the color from fading. Soap and water are the easiest way to clean this porch swing, and you can even disinfect it with bleach without damaging it.

Overall, this is a premium pick minus an overly high price tag. That said, we didn't like that we had to buy mounting brackets separately and would have preferred if all the accessories needed for installation were included. Also, because some of the holes didn’t line up when assembling it, we had to use a power drill to get them to fit.

Type: Hanging | Material: High-density polyethylene | Dimensions: 60.5 x 23.3 x 24 inches | Weight: 55 pounds | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds | Seating Capacity: 3

Classic design

Weatherproof

Rot-resistant

Features an acacia wood frame

Easy to assemble

Seats three people comfortably

Not as spacious as others on our list

Only two colors to choose from

Doesn’t come with cushions

If you need a porch swing that offers value and has a low price tag, we recommend the Best Choice Products Wooden Hanging Porch Swing. Although it’s one of the smallest full-size porch swings on our list, it still features a 500-pound capacity with a 45-inch seat, and can comfortably fit up to three people.

Each porch swing set includes anchor bolts, mounting hardware, and two zinc-coated steel chains which stave off rust and keep this porch swing looking new for a long time. It’s also easy to assemble, and we estimate you can set it up from start to finish in around 30 minutes.

You won’t find any special features with this swing, such as a canopy or console. But, its acacia frame is weatherproof and rot resistant, so more than likely it will last for years if it’s properly maintained.

Though it doesn’t have any cushions, the bottom seat is thick to give the swing more balance and comfort. This porch swing comes in only two color options: white and a natural wood finish.

Type: Hanging | Material: Acacia wood | Dimensions: 48 x 22 x 22.5 inches | Weight: 35.3 pounds | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds | Seating Capacity: 3

Adirondack-style swing

Flip-down center console with double cup holders

Seats three

Made from durable recycled plastic

Fade-resistant

Easy to clean

Longer shipping times

Heavy

Needs two people to assemble

Spacious Adirondack chairs have long been a favorite for their style and comfort. This Adirondack-style porch swing provides ample seating for three people (or two when the center console is down) and features two wide seat backs that recline slightly for a smooth swing.

You also get a console (with cupholders) in the middle that you can flip up or down as needed. Like our Best Overall pick, this chair is made in the U.S.A. from recycled plastic (otherwise known as high-density polyethylene), so you’ll save more trees, and it won’t deteriorate as fast as wood chairs.

Because the paint has special UV pigments that help the color stay longer, you won’t have to worry about re-painting or waterproofing it over time. To keep it pristine, you just need to occasionally gently wash it with soap and water.

At 96 pounds, it’s heavier than the average porch swing, so it’s likely you’ll need another person to help you hang it up. However, its step-by-step instructions are clear and easy to follow.

There are a wide variety of colors available, including solid and two-toned options. Each chair is built to order, which makes shipping times longer than usual. Expect it to take two to three weeks before it arrives. For home use, the swing is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Type: Hanging | Material: High-density polyethylene | Dimensions: 65 x 32.5 x 27 inches | Weight: 96 pounds | Weight Capacity: Not listed | Seating Capacity: 3 (2 if console is down)

Stand-alone design

Feels stable and secure

Durable wood material

Modern, minimalist design

Setup instructions could have been more clear

Not the most spacious option

Stand-alone porch swings are convenient because you can place them anywhere on your porch or patio. That’s why this option is so appealing, because you don’t have to go through the hassle of tethering it to the roof on your porch.

The seat itself is quite compact at 42 inches, although the stand spans 63 inches. Even though the weight capacity is not huge, we found that the porch swing was able to accommodate two people comfortably. However, it's not the most spacious option on our list, and those with a fuller frame may feel squished.

The swing’s frame is made from mahogany wood, giving it a rich, natural finish and offering strength and sturdiness. Judging by how well it did when exposed to outside elements under a tree—our designated testing spot, there should be no problem keeping it outside all year. However, some TLC is required, so it’s best to regularly apply teak oil to keep it in optimal condition.

Design-wise, it comes with two rust-resistant steel chains but has no canopy on the top, so you don’t get a layer of sun protection. But what’s really nice about this swing is that the back is slightly reclined for extra comfort while you swing. And although it would have been great if it came with matching cushions, it’s not a deal-breaker, and you can always buy extra if you need to.

While putting it together was mostly straightforward, the instructions were not so clear, which slowed us down. But, the good thing was that we didn’t need any additional hardware or a power drill, except for a hex tool that was used to get a better grip. Also, we found that it’s best to have two people to set it up.

Type: Stand-alone | Material: Mahogany wood | Dimensions: 63 x 65 x 48 inches | Weight: 74.8 pounds | Weight Capacity: 440 pounds | Seating Capacity: 2

Stunning fleur-de-lis design

Affordable price

Sturdy iron frame

Lightweight

Not good for reclining

Even though metal porch swings look sleek and modern, they can still add a homey touch to your outdoor porch or deck. The Andover Mills Kizer Hanging Porch Swing features a simple and elegant design but stands out for its striking fleur-de-lis shape on the seat back. At under $200, the price isn’t bad either—making it a great budget option, too.

This porch swing has a solid iron frame and comes with two heavy-duty steel chains to hold up the sides. Just keep in mind the weight capacity is just under 500 pounds, so you probably only want to have two people on it at a time. Although the manufacturers state that the swing is rust-resistant, you might have to take certain precautions to keep it from oxidizing, as it’s naturally prone to rust over time.

Overall, we like that it is lightweight, so it will be easy to lift up when you want to install it. But a wide-open space on the seat back—and between the handles and seat—makes us think that it’s probably better to sit and swing on this hanging porch swing rather than recline on it.

Type: Hanging | Material: Steel | Dimensions: 50 x 20 x 15.9 inches | Weight: 37.4 pounds | Weight Capacity: 485 pounds | Seating Capacity: 2

Timeless design

Weather resistant

Available in 11 colors

No cup holders

Not as comfortable as rollback types

This porch swing looks and feels like a wood porch swing but is actually made from a high-grade plastic polymer, which makes it durable and weather resistant. Still, with its straight back and slatted design, it offers a classic look to any porch or backyard. Thanks to the special lumber it's made from, it can withstand humid, dry, or cold climates, without the exterior fading or peeling.

This porch swing features a straight back and straight edges. While you do get a traditional look (it reminds us of park benches), you might be missing the smooth curves and comfort that come with a rollback type. Nevertheless, the swing adds a timeless look and is handy to have if you need to kick back outdoors on warm, sunny days. You can also get it in 11 neutral colors, including white, black, brown, and blue.

The Amelia is easy to clean: All you need is a brush and some soapy water to remove scuffs and most stains. We suggest that you do this at the beginning and end of every season to keep it in tip-top condition. For some, the Amelia might not have enough features to justify its high price, but because it’s so high-quality, it’s worth snagging it if it goes on sale.

Type: Hanging | Material: Plastic | Dimensions: 50.1 x 21.7 x 17.9 inches | Weight: Not listed | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds | Seating Capacity: 2

Contoured back and seat for added comfort

Includes necessary parts and accessories needed for installation

Can be installed on a porch or tree

Lacks color options

Limited weight capacity

If you’re yearning for a simple life, this Alcott Swing Walhalla Porch Swing is designed for peace and relaxation. You can install it on your patio or hook the swing onto a big tree branch if you want to be closer to nature. It features a natural stain finish and has no additional color options. If you like the style but want a color or stain to match your decor, however, you can always paint over it. Each set includes zinc chains, fasteners, and an assortment of nuts and bolts for installation.

The seat measures 56 inches, which is pretty spacious. However, you’ll need to make sure you have about 3 feet free all around your porch to give the swing enough room to move. We like that the back and seat are contoured, making it extremely comfortable to sit or lie down on.

Although it looks roomy enough to fit three adults on it, the weight capacity is only 500 pounds—so just be conscious that it’s not overloaded. And while it would have been nice if this porch swing came with cushions or a console, it still packs lots of value and comfort for its price.

Type: Hanging | Material: Wood | Dimensions: 60 x 23 x 29 inches | Weight: 42 pounds | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds | Seating Capacity: 3

Made from pressure-treated pine

Detailed assembly guide

Comes with springs and cup holders for added comfort and convenience

Includes extra touch-up paint if you need it

Enhances porch decor

Armrests are not that wide

Cup holders are too small and awkwardly placed

Pressure-treated pine makes this rollback porch swing durable and weather resistant—both ideal properties for those looking for a heavy-duty porch swing that will stand the test of time. Its main features are a wooden slatted design and curved edges offering a little Southern rustic charm for your porch or patio. Additionally, it comfortably seats two people, with a maximum weight limit of 700 pounds.

Setting it up was simple, thanks to its thorough instruction manual. While parts and accessories for assembly are included, just keep in mind that you’ll need a wrench (or two) to screw the pieces in properly. We found it pretty hefty, so you’ll likely need another person to help assemble and hang it up (like we did).

You can choose to have the porch swing hanging by ropes or chains as well as customize the length of the swing to your liking from 8 to 14 feet if you opt for the chains, and 16 feet for the ropes. The swing also comes with optional hanging hooks and comfort springs for an extra price to enhance comfort while sitting or swinging.

There are cupholders on both arms, which you can opt not to buy. For us, the best part about this porch was, surprisingly, its wooden slats, which felt really comfortable because it had no gap between the seat and back.

Overall, this porch swing looked good and brightened up our back porch decor. While we loved the white finish we chose, there are six other color options to choose from which are just as nice. If we could change anything it would be the cup holders—although they are convenient for holding cool drinks, we found them too small and awkwardly placed, which made it hard for us to grab our drinks. The porch swing also comes with a small pot of white paint, which comes in handy for quick touch-ups.

Type: Hanging | Material: Pressure-treated pine wood | Dimensions: 39 x 27 x 21.75 inches (3 feet), 50.5 x 27 x 21.75 inches (4 feet), 62.75 x 27 x 21.75 inches (5 feet) 75 x 27 x 21.75 inches (6 feet) | Weight: From 52 pounds (4 feet) to 62 pounds (5 feet) | Weight Capacity: 700 pounds | Seating Capacity: 2 people

Needs an outdoor furniture cover for full protection

If you thought a porch swing was comfortable, why not up the ante and go for a daybed? While a swinging bed on your porch could feel a little extra, if you want to be rocked to sleep in the fresh air—we say go for it.

This daybed swing from Ballard Designs is high quality, as it's made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified eucalyptus that is naturally resistant to moisture and insects. It’s available in both gray wash and white wash versions, both of which provide rustic, farmhouse charm.

The included twin-size cushion is covered in a durable performance fabric, although it cannot be removed for cleaning. And given the size of this swing, the brand recommends professional installation. It does not come with any hanging hardware, although the hanging chains are included. This is definitely a long-term investment, so consider protecting your purchase with the corresponding outdoor furniture cover.

Excess links can be unappealing to some

If you’re looking for an all-weather porch swing that offers deep-cushioned comfort, a cozy aesthetic, and an easy setup, this sophisticated wicker porch swing is definitely worth mentioning. This swing is by far one of the most comfortable porch swings we tested.

While it may not have the classic wooden design like other porch swings, its durable wicker frame and plush cushions look simply gorgeous on our porch. We especially liked how nicely the wicker color and cushions colors seamlessly blended with the stones on our deck fireplace and the deck stain. Not to mention that it made our deck look way more inviting and has become our favorite sitting spot.

Additionally, the porch swing covers all the cushions in olefin fabric—a sturdy performance fabric that's resistant to fading, stains, and mildew. The cushions are water resistant but can become saturated if you leave them out in the rain for too long. Its wicker material is also durable and can safely withstand extreme weather conditions such as heavy wind, thunderstorms, and bright sunlight without sustaining damage or fading.

This porch swing is spacious, so feel free to stretch your legs out or lie down. It also comes with small lumbar pillows that could be used on the sides or for extra back support. There is enough room to seat two adults and a small child comfortably.

Our only bone to pick is with its unflattering chain color and the fact that it has excess chain links which could be seen as an eyesore to some. Other than that, it’s worth buying at its current price and is also a great bargain buy, so we suggest keeping an eye out for it to go on sale. Better Homes & Gardens is owned by Southern Living’s parent company, Dotdash Meredith.

Water-repellent and fade-resistant polyester canopy

Cushion covers are not machine washable

On hot summer days, there’s nothing like catching a cool breeze while swinging in your yard. With the Purple Leaf Deluxe, you can do just that plus have a glass of sweet tea on the side, just in case you get thirsty.

We like everything about this swing from its steel frame to its plush upholstery. The swing is also water repellent and UV resistant, so you should be able to keep it outdoors all year round. It seats three people and can hold up to 750 pounds of weight. There are also foot pads at the bottom, so you don’t have to worry about it slipping around when it’s in motion.

You can also angle the canopy at the top to get the sun exposure or shade you want. Other beneficial features include foldable tables on either side to hold cool drinks and snacks. Plus, the top features solar lights that offer a warm ambiance.

While you may not find this swing’s cushions to be the thickest, they are still soft and comfortable. The cushion covers are not machine washable, so you’ll have to make do with spot cleaning dirt and stains as you see them. It comes in several colors, including beige, navy blue, terra, and turquoise.

Type: Stand-alone | Material: Steel, polyester | Dimensions: 74.4 x 68.5 x 50.3 inches | Weight: 95.8 pounds | Weight Capacity: 750 pounds | Seating Capacity: 3

Shabby-chic rattan design

Comes fully assembled

Cannot be exposed to moisture or sun

Does not include hanging hardware

Pricey

This hanging rattan bench from Serena & Lily is a gorgeous way to add a natural element to your porch. Assembling it is simple—the body is already in one piece, so you don’t have to put it together. Just keep in mind that no hardware is included with the set, so you’ll have to buy screws and bolts for hanging separately.

Exposure to water, sun, and moisture will ruin this swing, so best to use it indoors or under a well-covered porch. To keep it clean, all it needs is for you to wipe it down with a damp, white cotton cloth every month. You also want to avoid using any harsh chemicals or furniture polish, as these will damage it.

Our final thought on this porch swing is that while it is fabulous and a great statement piece—it may not be the most practical choice for families with children. This is because it’s not as rugged as wood or metal, so it might not hold up well if your little ones decide to swing or play on it.

Type: Hanging | Material: Rattan | Dimensions: 54 x 24 x 27 inches | Weight: Not listed | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds | Seating Capacity: 2

The Polywood Vineyard 60-Inch Porch Swing is our clear favorite because it’s built to withstand both heat and wintry conditions. Plus, it is one of the most spacious options on our list and comes with a 20-year warranty.

If you’re trying to stay within a budget, we recommend the Best Choice Products Wooden Hanging Porch Swing. It’s made from acacia wood and fits up to three people. Plus, it won’t take you long to put it together.

We tested a handful of porch swings from this list for a two-week period in Alabama, including wicker, wood, and recycled plastic options. First, we assembled each porch swing according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Afterward, we used and noted the comfort levels of the porch swings throughout the testing period by sitting, lounging, swinging, and more on them. We are still in the process of long-term testing these swings and will update this review with fresh insights as we have them.

You’ll find porch swings mostly made from wood, metal, and plastic. Wood is the classic choice for many homeowners. It resists moisture, so it’s good for humid and cold climates and can be left outside all year round.

You’ll also find porch swings made from metal, which is also a good choice if you’re looking for something durable and long lasting. Many of these metal swings are weather proof and rust-resistant.

Finally, there are also porch swings made from plastic. We particularly like high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is made from recycled plastics and won’t rot, splinter, or fade. These are especially great if you live in coastal areas where there is high humidity. Our Best Overall pick, the Polywood Vineyard 60-Inch Porch Swing, is made from HDPE, as is our favorite splurge swing, the Lux Craft Adirondack Swing.

Porch swing sets will usually come with a manual to show you how to put them together plus the mounting hardware you need to hang it up on your deck or porch. Keep in mind that they are heavy, so you might want to have someone else help you with the assembly.

“If you're not particularly handy or lack experience in DIY projects, it's wise to consider hiring a professional contractor. They have the expertise to install the swing properly and minimize the risk of any accidents or injuries,” says Sirna.

According to Sirna, porch swings can vary in size, but on average, they are typically around 4 to 5 feet long. The depth of a porch swing can vary significantly, ranging anywhere from 18 inches to 46 inches. Be sure to measure your outdoor space prior to purchasing to ensure whichever swing you choose will fit. And consider how many people will be sitting on the swing, as different porch swings support varying weights.

Porch swings fall into two broad categories—hanging and stand-alone—and can be broken out even further from there. Hanging porch swings hang from your porch rafters and are the most recognizable type.

Stand-alone swings do not have to be installed. Instead, they are an all-in-one unit that can be placed anywhere on your porch or in your yard.

Within these categories, you also have rollback porch swings, which have a rounded back and edges that make the porch more comfy to relax on, and Adirondack porch swings, which have wide backs and armrests.

Finally, you can find single-seater porch swings, as well as daybed swings that can accommodate twin or full size mattresses.

There is no right or wrong answer here—as this will depend on personal preference. Wood is the traditional choice for porch swings, while a metal porch swing has an updated look. But, both wood and metal are long-lasting materials if properly maintained. “I personally prefer the look and feel of a wood porch swing, as the metal can get so hot during the summer months,” says Sirna.

“The size of your porch swing will depend on your space, but a typical swing will hold two people and is about 5 feet in length,” explains Sirna.

For Meacham, a porch swing should be “as big as your space allows.” She adds, “Ideally, your porch swing would be deep and cozy enough for an outdoor mattress and pillows, perfect to curl up and read, cuddle your person, or take a nice mid-day nap.”

“Typically, your swing should hang about 17 to 19 inches above the floor,” says Meacham. “But this depends on your family's height and personal preferences. Think of it like a sofa that you'd feel comfortable getting in and out of.”

Before you buy a hanging porch swing, you should check to see if your porch ceiling has joists on it to hold it. “The size of the joist (or number of joists) you need is going to depend on how big the swing is and how many people you intend to support,” says Meacham.

“A single joist can comfortably support two people. If you’re trying to seat four people, you’ll need more joists,” she explains. “Make sure you have at least 4 feet of swinging space and check the integrity of your chains and joists often to avoid any accidents.”

If you’re not sure if your porch can safely support a porch swing, Sirna says, “The easiest and safest way to do this is by hiring a contractor to evaluate the structural integrity of your porch.”
